It has been both amazing and dismaying to see the large number of delays in this hearing. All of the documents for this hearing were filed about a year ago. It is difficult to understand why the court continues to delay the hearing which of course delays the court’s decision. We can only hope that in the end the court will make the right decision, perhaps expanding beyond California the existing preliminary injunction.
As expected.
and what’s the excuse this time?
“perhaps expanding beyond California the existing preliminary injunction.”
Or at least making it permanent in California.
So after asking 5 different AI sources and research against the SCOTUS federal injunction ruling, the judge can issue this nationwide, however, the DoJ can EASILY appeal this to apply to ONLY the Does involved.
Unless the DoJ adds this to the “consideration” factors of cases that they make alterations to SORNA factors, this case is dead except maybe California only.
It’s been so long that I completely forgot what the law suit was about.
POSTPONED: Per Pacific Legal Foundation, Monday’s Hearing has now been rescheduled to April 13th (2026).
How can this nonsense be allowed to continue?
Thank you for sharing this, Janice. These repeated postponements have real‑world consequences for people who are simply waiting for the restoration of rights that should never have been taken from them. Your continued advocacy on behalf of those affected — and your commitment to the constitutional principles the courts are sworn to uphold — means a great deal. I remain hopeful the court will recognize the importance of these issues and provide a thoughtful ruling when its schedule allows.
This will never happen. When will they just give up and admit public registration is unconstitutional punishment?
It’s infuriating enough that they keep kicking the can down the road. But to have these little two weeks delays are killers.
While I’m glad that folks in CA can continue to live without SORNA hanging over them doe the time being, the rest of us in other states are hoping the outcome of this case will result in an injunction nation wide.
@Janice, for those of us who live in these others states, is there anything we should/can do to try getting similar relief? Would there be any benefit to raising similar suits in other district courts?
It looks like the hearing for Monday has been vacated and Judge Bernal has issued a ruling – issuing a permanent injunction for the resides of CA! I’ve already read through the whole document and am a bit confused about the parts that were in-part granted or denied, but I’m very excited to hear Janice’s take on this news and progress. I’m also very curious to hear what could come next. How can we still work to get this type of injunction/relief for residents of other states?
